How to choose thermal spray powder -Part 2: Carbide powders

1 Classification of thermal spraying powders.

1 Chromium carbide based powders
* Manufacturing process:Made by Sintered, Blend, Agglomerated and sintered, Densified, Activated
* Chemical composition of powder: Cr3C2, Cr3C2-7NiCr, Cr3C2-25NiCr, Cr3C2-30NiCr, Cr3C2-65NiCr, Cr3C2-40NiCr
* Excellent for high temperature cavitation, abrasion and sliding wear
* Good hot gas and corrosion resistance
* Hard and wear resistance
* Higher CrC increase hardness
* Useful up to 871℃
* Cr3C2-30NiCr made by activated process improved DE and stress properties over traditional blended CrC-NiCr
2 Tungsten carbide based powders
* Manufacturing process:Made by Sintered, Cast, Blend, Agglomerated and sintered
* Chemical composition of powder: WC-8Co, WC-12Co, WC-17Co, WC-10Ni, WC-Co-Cr, WC-CrC-Ni
* Excellent low temperature wear resistance properties
* Dense, hard coating with marginal oxideation and corrosion resistance
* Useful up to 482℃
* WC-12Co made by agglomerated and sintered has densified structure with finedcarbide dispersion promatefiner microstructure, better DE and denser, smoother coating
As mentioned at the beginning, the correct selection of powder is the key to successful coating application. However, the selection of powder is indeed a very complex process. Without enough experience and theoretical basis, it is difficult to choose a very suitable powder. The factors we should consider include but are not limited to:
*The manufacturing level of powder suppliers;
*Powder manufacturing process, mechanical crushing, sintering, atomization and agglomeration, etc;
*Characteristics of spray gun, such as sg100 spray gun of Praxair and F4 spray gun of Metco.
*In practical application, the spraying powder parameters need to be adjusted according to the characteristics of spray gun; Size, material and other characteristics of the workpiece.
